Selling a Car on Finance

Updated . General information, not financial advice.

You can sell a car that’s on finance, but you must clear the finance first, because the lender owns the car until the agreement is paid off. This guide explains the steps, how to sell privately without risk to you or the buyer, and how selling to a dealer or car-buying service works.

In short

Yes, you can sell a car on finance, but you must settle the finance before ownership passes to the buyer. Get a settlement figure, compare it with the car’s value, then either pay off the finance before a private sale, or sell to a dealer or buying service that settles it for you.

Can you sell a car that’s on finance?

With HP and PCP, the lender is the legal owner until you’ve made the final payment. You’re the registered keeper, but that isn’t the same as ownership. So you can sell the car, but only once the finance is settled, or as part of the same transaction.

If the car was bought with a personal loan, you already own it and can sell it freely, though you’ll still need to keep repaying the loan.

Important

Selling a car without settling the finance is a breach of your agreement and can be treated as fraud. You remain liable for the debt, and the buyer may have problems with ownership.

How to sell a car on finance step by step

  1. Get a settlement figure from your lender. See how to get a settlement figure.
  2. Value the car with several buying services or dealers, and check private sale prices.
  3. Compare. If the car is worth more than the settlement figure, you have positive equity. If it’s worth less, see negative equity.
  4. Choose how to sell: privately, or to a dealer or car-buying service.
  5. Settle the finance before or at the point of sale.
  6. Get written confirmation that the agreement is settled, and give the buyer a copy.

Selling privately: how to do it safely

A private sale often gets the best price, but buyers will run a finance check, and a car showing outstanding finance is harder to sell. The safest approach:

  • Settle the finance first, using your own savings or a short-term loan if needed, then sell the car as finance-free.
  • If you can’t settle first, be upfront with the buyer, show them the settlement figure, and agree that their payment goes towards clearing it. Some buyers will pay the lender directly. Don’t hand over the car or the keys until the finance is cleared.
  • Take payment by bank transfer and check that the money has cleared in your account before handing over the car.
  • Never accept “proof of payment” screenshots, overpayments or unusual payment methods.
  • Update the DVLA online once the sale is complete.

Selling to a dealer or car-buying service

This is usually the simplest route. The dealer or buying service checks the finance, pays the settlement figure directly to your lender, and pays you any equity.

  • If you have positive equity, you receive the difference.
  • If you have negative equity, you pay the difference to the buyer, usually by bank transfer.

You’ll often get less than in a private sale, but you avoid the work and the risk.

What if you have negative equity?

You’ll need to pay the difference between the sale price and the settlement figure. If you can’t, consider keeping the car for longer, overpaying, or voluntary termination if you’ve paid half the total amount payable. See negative equity.

Selling a car on finance FAQs

Do I need the lender’s permission to sell?

You don’t need permission as such, but you do need to settle the finance so ownership can pass to the buyer. Selling without settling breaches your agreement.

What if the buyer pays me directly?

That’s fine, as long as you use the money to settle the finance straight away, before handing over the car. Ideally, settle first, or have the buyer pay the lender.

Can a buyer tell if a car has finance on it?

Yes. A vehicle history check, such as those from HPI or the AA, shows any outstanding finance. Most sensible buyers run one.

How long does it take for finance to clear after settling?

Usually a few days for the lender to update finance registers. Your settlement confirmation letter is proof in the meantime.

Can I sell a PCP car before the end of the agreement?

Yes. Settle the finance (you’ll need the full settlement figure, which includes the final payment) and you can then sell it.

Can I sell a van or motorbike on finance?

Yes, the same steps apply to any vehicle on HP or PCP.
