Business Vehicle Finance

Updated . General information, not financial advice.

Financing a vehicle through a limited company is different from financing one personally. The agreement is with the company, it isn’t regulated by the Consumer Credit Act, and the tax treatment can make a big difference to the real cost. This guide explains the main types of business vehicle finance and the points to check before you sign.

In short

Limited companies usually finance vehicles with hire purchase, lease purchase, contract hire or a finance lease. These agreements aren’t regulated by the Consumer Credit Act, so your rights depend on the contract. Lenders often ask directors for a personal guarantee. Tax and VAT vary by product and vehicle, so check the options with your accountant.

The main types of business vehicle finance

Type How it works Who owns it Typical use
Hire purchase (HP) Deposit, then fixed payments; the company owns the vehicle at the end Company, after the last payment Vehicles the company wants to keep
Lease purchase Lower payments with a compulsory final payment Company, after the final payment Vans and pickups, to lower monthly costs
Business contract hire Fixed rentals for an agreed term and mileage, then hand back The leasing company Cars and vans, predictable costs
Finance lease Rentals cover most of the vehicle’s value; at the end it’s sold and you share the proceeds The leasing company VAT-registered businesses wanting flexibility

For more detail on each, see van hire purchase, van lease purchase and van leasing. The same products are used for cars and pickups.

Business finance isn’t regulated

Limited companies aren’t “individuals” under the consumer credit rules, so agreements with them aren’t regulated by the Consumer Credit Act (FCA). This means:

  • No automatic right to voluntary termination. Ending early depends on the contract.
  • No statutory early settlement rebate. Ask how a settlement figure is calculated.
  • Fewer cooling-off and information rights.

Why this matters

Read the termination and settlement terms before you sign. With unregulated finance, the contract is what decides what you’ll pay if you need to end the agreement early.

Personal guarantees

Many lenders ask company directors to sign a personal guarantee, especially for newer companies. If the company can’t pay, you could be personally liable. Make sure you understand what you’re guaranteeing.

What lenders look at

  • How long the company has been trading. Two or more years of accounts helps.
  • Company accounts and business bank statements.
  • The company’s credit file, and often the directors’ personal credit files.
  • What the vehicle is for and how it fits the business.

Tax and VAT points to check

Business vehicle tax is complex, so take advice from your accountant. The main points:

  • Company car tax. If a director or employee uses a company car privately, they pay benefit-in-kind tax. Electric cars have much lower rates, rising from 4% in 2026/27 to 9% by 2029/30. See Autumn Budget 2026: what drivers should watch for.
  • Vans. Private use of a company van usually leads to a flat-rate van benefit charge, unless use is restricted to commuting and limited personal use.
  • Capital allowances. Vehicles bought outright or on HP may qualify for capital allowances. The rate depends on the vehicle type and, for cars, CO2 emissions. New zero-emission cars may qualify for a 100% first-year allowance.
  • Lease rentals are usually deductible. For cars over 50g/km CO2, 15% of the rental is disallowed.
  • VAT. VAT on vans used for business is usually reclaimable. On cars, it’s rarely reclaimable on purchase, and usually 50% on lease rentals.
  • Double cab pickups are now treated as cars for company car tax and capital allowances. See pickup tax changes.

Business or personal finance?

If you’re a director, you could finance a vehicle personally and claim mileage from the company, or finance it through the company. The right choice depends on the vehicle, how much you use it privately and the tax position. Personal finance keeps your Consumer Credit Act rights. Ask your accountant to compare both.

If you’re a sole trader, see self-employed vehicle finance.

Business vehicle finance FAQs

Can a new limited company get vehicle finance?

Yes, but lenders may ask for a larger deposit or a director’s personal guarantee if the company has a short trading history.

Is business car finance regulated?

Not for limited companies. Agreements with sole traders and small partnerships usually are, unless they’re over £25,000 and mainly for business.

Can my company reclaim VAT on a car?

Rarely on a purchase, because there’s usually some private use. On car leases, the company can usually reclaim 50% of the VAT on rentals. VAT on vans is usually fully reclaimable.

Is contract hire or hire purchase better for a business?

Contract hire gives fixed, predictable costs and no resale risk. HP means the company owns the vehicle and may claim capital allowances. Your accountant can compare the tax effect.

Do I need a personal guarantee?

Often, especially for newer companies or larger amounts. Check exactly what you’re liable for before signing.
